Alberth Elis Was Placed in An Induced Coma
Honduran international Alberth Elis was placed in an induced coma and underwent surgery last night after suffering a severe head injury in the Girondins de Bordeaux-Guingamp (1-0) match in the French second division.
According to the newspaper L'Équipe, initial reports suggest that the operation went well, but his close associates are still awaiting further information about his health status and any potential lasting effects.
The 28-year-old forward had been placed in an induced coma due to signs of a serious head injury after colliding with Guingamp defender Donatien Gomis early in the match.
"I think he touched the ball first and I hit him. For a second, I also lost consciousness. He lost consciousness. I hope he recovers," Gomis said, as quoted by L'Équipe.
Elis received medical attention for eight minutes at the stadium before being taken to the Matmut Atlantique infirmary and later to the Pellegrin University Hospital in Bordeaux.
