AFCON 2023: Ivory Coast's Multi-Billion-Dollar Investment
Ivory Coast is gearing up to host the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a government investment exceeding one billion dollars. The primary objective of this investment is to bolster the country's recovery since the end of the civil war in 2011.
The effort includes the construction of four new stadiums and the renovation of two existing ones in five host cities. Airports, roads, hospitals, and hotels have also seen significant improvements in Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.
Despite concerns about economic sustainability, with a $3.5 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2022, organizers insist that the goal is not to generate financial gains but to reposition Ivory Coast.
The new stadiums and sports facilities aim to leave a lasting legacy, while investment in key infrastructure seeks to attract investors and enhance long-term tourism.
Security and smooth execution of the matches are considered crucial to making the most of this sporting event and solidifying Ivory Coast as a sports and economic hub in the region.
