World Champs Outraged by Argentina vs Morocco Debacle
Several players from Argentina's national team, who won the Qatar 2022 World Cup and the Copa América on July 14, have expressed their outrage over what happened in the U-23 team's debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which ended in a 1-2 defeat to Morocco.
Captain Lionel Messi was one of the first to voice his displeasure about the incident at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint Etienne, calling it "unbelievable" on his Instagram account.
Lyon's left-back Nicolás Tagliafico showed his frustration on X: "Coming out of the circus, are we going to talk about why it was suspended or keep pretending nothing happened? If it had been the other way around, I can't imagine what they'd be saying."
Roma's midfielder Leandro Paredes was also shocked. He was live in an interview with Argentine outlet Olga when he learned about the game's resolution. "I yelled a lot for the 2-2. Now they say it's back to 2-1, I just read it. I don't know what happened. Three more minutes, without fans. Just read it, it's crazy," he said.
Atlético Madrid's midfielder Rodrigo de Paul expressed his support for the team led by former footballer Javier Mascherano. "More than ever with you guys. You can beat anyone," the former Racing Club player wrote on Instagram.
The match was suspended for over an hour due to a pitch invasion when the score was 2-2 following a last-minute goal by Argentina after trailing 2-0. This goal had to be reviewed, forcing the players (who were in the locker room waiting for the match to end) to return to the field. After VAR confirmed the goal was offside, the players had to play an additional three minutes.
After everything that happened, the final score was 2-1 in favor of Morocco. Argentina will now face Iraq and Ukraine in the upcoming matches of Group B in the Paris Olympic football tournament.
