Prisca Awiti and the WhatsApp Messages That Led Her to Represent Mexico
Prisca Awiti, born in England to a Mexican mother, has carved an interesting path in the world of judo. Thanks to the Mexican nationality acquired through her mother, Awiti had the option to represent Mexico internationally, a decision she made in 2017.
Renowned Mexican judoka Vanessa Zambotti was not surprised when Awiti reached out to switch her federation to represent Mexico. “I wasn’t surprised at all. There are several athletes with dual nationality who make these changes. What did surprise me was how she got my phone number. I knew she was Mexican and had dual nationality, so it wasn’t surprising that she wanted to join us,” Zambotti commented.
The process for Awiti to represent Mexico was not immediate. After her initial contact with Zambotti and officials from the International Judo Federation, the necessary procedures for the federation switch began. This process took about two years due to her previous representation of England in international competitions. “The change wasn’t instant. There is a required period for an athlete who has represented one country to switch federations. It took a year for the paperwork to be completed and for Prisca to compete for Mexico. Now, she has records in both England and Mexico,” Zambotti explained.
Despite her initial success as a competitor in England, where the 63 kg category was highly contested, Awiti decided to switch her sporting nationality. Her love for her mother's homeland and the lack of opportunities in England were key factors in her decision. In her biography, Awiti mentions that the intense competition in her category in England and her desire to represent Mexico, her mother's country, were the main reasons for her change.
Today, Prisca Awiti continues to be an inspiring example of how passion for sport and personal connections can cross borders and create new opportunities.
