Guatemala Makes History with Its First Olympic Gold in Paris 2024
With fireworks and tons of joyful messages, Guatemalans celebrated shooter Adriana Ruano’s Olympic gold in the trap shooting final in Paris. This is the country’s first-ever Olympic gold and its second medal in these Games.
The 29-year-old Guatemalan’s win was dominating, setting an Olympic record with 45 hits, five more than the next competitor, Italy’s Silvana Maria Stanco. The bronze went to Australia’s Penny Smith, who had 32 hits.
"Guatemala's Olympic history is written in gold letters thanks to Adriana Ruano. First Olympic medal for a Guatemalan woman, first gold for our country," wrote Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo de León on his X account.
This is Guatemala’s second medal at the Paris Games, both in shooting, following Jean Pierre Brol’s bronze in the men’s trap on Tuesday. Ruano had debuted in the previous Tokyo 2020 Olympics, finishing 26th. With her Olympic victory, Ruano joins Costa Rican swimmer Sylvia Pol and Panamanian jumper Irving Saladino as the only Central American athletes to have won a gold medal in the region’s history.
Guatemala, now ranked 16th in the Paris medal table, has three Olympic medals in total, with the first one being won by race walker Erick Barrondo, who took silver in the 20 km walk in London 2012.
