Argentine Press Hails Franco Colapinto After Scoring F1 Points
The term "historic" has been widely used by the Argentine press following Franco Colapinto’s (Williams) remarkable eighth-place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the 17th race of the Formula 1 World Championship. This result earned Colapinto his first-ever points in just his second F1 race.
Infobae's headline reads: "Historic: Franco Colapinto finishes 8th at the Azerbaijan GP and earns his first four points in Formula 1." The outlet also highlighted that Colapinto became the first Argentine in over 40 years to score points, following in the footsteps of Carlos Reutemann, the country’s last F1 star, who competed between 1972 and 1982 for teams like Williams.
Clarín also showcased Colapinto’s performance, stating: "Historic Colapinto: he gained three positions in the last two laps, finished eighth, and scored points in just his second race." La Nación’s digital edition featured a large photo of Colapinto smiling, calling his drive "brilliant." Their headline emphasized his 8th-place finish in what they described as a "chaotic" race.
Página/12 similarly noted his impressive achievement, writing: "Historic performance by Colapinto: finishes eighth and scores points in his second race." In the sports realm, Olé praised the young driver for "making history in Baku" and his impressive last-minute overtakes to secure points, after sitting outside the top 10 for much of the race.
El Gráfico also celebrated the milestone, stating that Colapinto "delivered an incredible performance" and broke a 42-year streak, referring to Reutemann’s podium finish in South Africa in 1982. ESPN Argentina enthusiastically posted: "PURE HISTORY FOR ARGENTINE MOTORSPORT!" thanking the "giant" Colapinto for his breakthrough.
TyC Sports highlighted Colapinto’s "historic" drive, including a quote from the young driver: "It’s a dream come true." Other outlets such as TNT Sports and Ámbito also called Colapinto’s performance "historic," praising his ability to capitalize on late-race opportunities to secure such a significant finish so early in his F1 career.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was won by Australia’s Oscar Piastri (McLaren), while Max Verstappen (Red Bull) finished fifth, maintaining his lead in the championship standings.
