Four-time MotoAmerica Superbike king Josh Hayes reminded his younger rivals exactly why he's one of the most decorated riders in series' history with a clutch victory over Yamaha teammate Cameron Beaubier and Suzuki upstart Toni Elias in Race 2 at Laguna Seca.
Following essentially the same plot as the day's earlier Race 1, a four-man melee (one that also involved second Yosh Suzuki pilot Roger Hayden) whittled down to a three-man shootout in the contest's waning stages.
Hayes managed to overcome repeated dive-bombing attempts from Elias in the final laps and then survived a last-corner assault from defending champ Beaubier to streak to the checkered flag in first place.
The win is the Mississippian's second of the season and the 60th of his illustrious career.
Hayden came home in fourth, albeit some 15 seconds back, while Italian Claudio Corti secured the Superstock 1000 win (fifth overall) to finally put a halt to Josh Herrin's win streak at seven.
The MotoAmerica Superbike championship will now take an extended break before returning to action for the '16 season finale at New Jersey Motorsports Park on September 9-11.
