The ninth-seeded Australian was in ruthless mood against Hurkacz in a blistering 75-minute win. He converted all four of his break points and saved the one break point he faced to advance with little trouble. De Minaur now leads Hurkacz 2-1 in their ATP Head2Head series, with this their first meeting since 2019.
De Minaur, whose best Masters 1000 result was a final run in Toronto in 2023, has never advanced beyond the fourth round in the California desert. The No. 10 will aim to change that record when he takes on Francisco Cerundolo. The Argentine beat Novak Djokovic's conqueror Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-4.
De Minaur has enjoyed a good start to the season, highlighted by a first Australian Open quarter-final and a title match showing at the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam. He is 15-1 against players outside the Top 20 in 2025.
