Borussia Dortmund sets up Barcelona quarter-final
Borussia Dortmund came from behind to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the second year in a row, after a 2-1 win over Lille in the second leg sealed a 3-2 aggregate victory.
The sides were level going into the second leg, after a 1-1 draw in Dortmund last week, with Lille striking first.
Jonathan David gave the host a perfect start, sliding a weak shot through the legs of Gregor Kobel, who should have done better to keep it out.
Dortmund pushed to restore parity, being denied in a stunning goal-mouth scramble shortly after before Pascal Gross saw a header skim the crossbar just before the break.
Niko Kovac's side came out with renewed purpose after the break and equalised in the 54th minute, Emre Can coolly scoring from the penalty spot after Thomas Meunier had tripped Julian Brandt.
Beier then scored the winner for last season's runner-up, picking out the top corner with a stunning strike after Karim Adeyemi had struck the crossbar.
David had one last chance to level the tie for Lille but sent his first-time volley straight at Kobel as the French side failed to reach a first-ever quarter-final in the competition.
Dortmund will face Barcelona for a place in the semi-finals, while it was a cruel end for Lille, who had qualified directly from the league phase by finishing in the top eight, thanks to notable victories over Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
