Mahut remains on course to regain Topshelf title
An historic double awaits Nicolas Mahut if he can get the better of David Goffin in the Topshelf Open final.
Nicolas Mahut remains on course to regain the Topshelf Open title following his 5-7 6-3 6-4 semi-final victory over home hope Robin Haase on Saturday.
Mahut beat Stan Wawrinka to win this title back in 2013 and will contest his second final of the weekend on Sunday.
After coming from behind to seal his progression from the last four, Mahut - paired with Pierre-Hugues Herbert - was unable to clinch men's doubles glory against Ivo Karlovic and Lukasz Kubot.
And Mahut, who came through three qualifying matches to reach the main singles draw, could be forgiven for feeling tired. After missing a break point at 3-2 up in the first set against Haase, he was himself the victim of a late break that handed his opponent the lead.
The Frenchman required four break points to make his first breakthrough in the second and squandered three chances to wrap up the set before eventually restoring parity.
However, in contrast to the earlier two sets, Mahut wasted no time in getting on the front foot in the third - his break of serve in the opening game enough to edge victory.
Only second seed David Goffin lies between Mahut and a third ATP World Tour title, with the Belgian having beaten Gilles Muller 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 in his semi-final.
Mahut would become only the second man to win two titles as a qualifier, following in the footsteps of Senegal's Yahiya Doumbia.
