IndyCar driver Justin Wilson died on Monday from injuries sustained in the ABC Supply 500.

Wilson suffered a serious head injury in Sunday's race in Pennsylvania when a large piece of debris from another car made contact with his helmet during a crash in the final laps at Pocono Raceway.

He was 37.

"This is a monumentally sad day for IndyCar and the motorsports community as a whole," Mark Miles, CEO of IndyCar's parent Hulman and Company, told a news conference.

"Justin's elite ability to drive a race car was matched by his unwavering kindness, character and humility, which is what made him one of the most respected members of the paddock. 

"As we know, the racing industry is one big family, and our efforts moving forward will be focused on rallying around Justin's family to ensure they get the support they need during this unbelievably difficult time."

Wilson was unconscious when he was transported by helicopter after the crash to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where he was in a coma.

The piece of debris came from the car of Sage Karam, who spun into a wall with 18 laps remaining.

Impact from the crash sent pieces of the car flying into the air as approaching drivers passed by. One of the larger objects can be seen falling onto Wilson's head before his car veers to the left directly into an interior wall.

Wilson was born in Sheffield, England and grew up in the area.

He competed in American open-wheel racing since 2004, recording seven career IndyCar victories - the most recent in 2012 at Texas Motor Speedway - and eight pole positions in 174 races.

Wilson is survived by wife Julia and two daughters. His younger brother, Stefan, also has competed in the Verizon IndyCar Series and Indy Lights.
