Nasser Ghanim Al-Khelaifi - Mbappe deserves to win the Ballon d’Or
PSG president Nasser Ghanim Al-Khelaifi has opened up to the media touching on a number of issues ranging from the new era at the club and reflecting on the development of French football.
On PSG trying to win the Champions League, Al-Khelaifi confirmed that the Parisians are looking to create a new team culture under Luis Enrique with the Champions League not being the pri
"The Champions League is not at all an obsession – that is over. I said that at the first press conference with Luis Enrique. We are building a new identity; our own style, our own principles of how to play, an offensive play – and a new culture. That’s what we want – and then the results will follow. We are building a team that is really playing as a team – we want our players to enjoy playing, our staff to enjoy coaching, and for our fans to enjoy it when you watch."
Whilst Nasser Ghanim Al-Khelaifi also suggested that star player Kylian Mbappe deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.
"Any issues we had stay in the family and Kylian is family. I’m proud of what he - and all the squad - are doing. We have the best player in the world and for me he deserves the Ballon d’Or."
Whilst also touching on the recent comments made by former PSG attacker Lionel Messi.
"There’s a lot of talk outside, I don’t know what he did or didn’t say. As everyone saw – we even published a video – we celebrated Messi at training (when he won the World Cup), and we also recognized it privately. But with respect – we’re a French club. It was sensitive of course to celebrate at the stadium. We need to respect the country that he defeated – his French team mates, and our fans too. But he was, and is, an amazing player – we were proud to have him here."
Whilst the PSG chairman also reflected on how French football overall has developed whilst he has been in charge of the Parsians.
"We want our fans to be proud of the team as PSG fans, but also proud that we’re representing France on the world stage. We are always thinking of ways we can promote French football. Yesterday I was with Nike for the new 2025/26 jersey and the first thing I said was: “where is the French flag?”. Because when we play Champions League, international matches we want to make all French people proud of their French club."
"I think the last two years it (the League) has improved for sure, 100%. When we came, and where we are. People speak about the French league negatively sometimes and not in a fair way. The French league is not an easy league. People think it’s easy and when they come here they see it’s a tough league. The key for the League’s success is keeping local talent, and thinking more internationally – not just domestically. That’s how leagues grow."
Whilst Nasser Ghanim Al-Khelaifi ended his conversation explaining why he wants to be hands on in building a new era at PSG.
"I enjoy every minute here and I’m trying to be closer to the team and to the Club because I think it’s a really important moment in a new era to build the base and be closer to the Club."
