Mexico U-17s move to World Cup quarterfinals with win over Chile
The Baby Tri topped the host 4-1 and awaits the winner of Russia and Ecuador in the quarterfinal.
Mexico's U-17 team eliminated host Chile in the round of 16 on Wednesday to move to the quarterfinals of the U-17 World Cup.
Chile opened the scoring in the 40th minute with Rene Mendez's corner kick fell to Brian Levia, who sent a slow shot in from six yards out. But rather than hang heads, Mexico struck back just two minutes later. Kevin Mangana set up Claudio Zamudio with a square ball, and the Morelia prospect found the equalizer.
In the 57th minute, Aguirre missed a golden chance to put the Baby Tri ahead, running down the center and getting the pass but ultimately sending the ball wide of the mark.
But four minutes later Pablo Lopez made supporters forget about that miss with a low, driven shot with his left foot from about 20 yards out that found the back of the net to put the Mexicans up 2-1 on the home side. It was a rocket of a shot that came off thanks to a dummy that allowed Camilo Zamudio to lay it back for Lopez.
Lopez turned provider in the 69th minute. With his cleats nearly touching the chalk on the left side of Mexico's attack, Lopez sent a ball toward the box, and Eduardo Aguirre beat the Chilean defenders to the pass to turn in Mexico's third.
Chile didn't go quietly, with Mexico goalkeeper Abraham Isai coughing up an enticing rebound after a Menendez shot in the final 10 minutes, but the danger was cleared out by the defense as the win was secured.
It was beyond doubt in stoppage time when right back Diego Cortes darted forward and played a one-two with Nahum Gomez to get on the score sheet and make the final mark 4-1.
Mexico will face the winner of Thursday's match between Russia and Ecuador on Monday.
