Jo Hyeon-woo the hero as South Korea progress to the quarter-finals with a shootout win over Saudi Arabia
Keeper Jo Hyeon-woo turned out to be the hero for Saudi Arabia saving penalties and silencing a raucous Education City Stadium. As, South Korea came from behind to defeat Saudi Arabia 4-2 in a shootout.
Saudi Arabia's fans were in full voice at Education City Stadium and the jeers for the South Korean players whenever they were in possession set the tone for the Green Falcons. It was fraught in the opening exchanges and it was clear that Saudi Arabia had been advised to use their physical dominance and that was underlined as defender Ali Lajami slammed into Son Heung-min.
The South Korean star created the first chance of note with 19 minutes on the clock. A surging run broke the offside trap and immediately brought about a foreboding roar from the Saudi fans. Hassan Altambakti got the better of the Tottenham star and the fans roared their approval. South Korea crafted their second chance soon after. Son again latching onto a lofted ball, killed the ball and made his way towards goal, this time Hassan Altambakti blocked the effort and received a similar roar of approval from the Saudi Arabian faithful.
Saudi soon hit their stride and created two golden moments to break the deadlock. First reigning AFC Asian Player of the Year Salem Aldawsari skipped through the South Korean midfield and laid the ball off to strike partner Saleh Alshehri, however, is effort slid well wide. The best chance came with five minutes remaining in the half. The roars continued as South Korea desperately tried to find parity, but Ahmed Al-Kassar was at his best to quickly block Hwang In-beom and Son Heung-min before diving at the near post to push away a header to be greeted by even more roars from the Saudi fans.
South Korea continued press eventually in the 99th minute they had that goal. Seol Young-woo was free at the back post and knocked the ball to Cho Gue-sung who had a simple header, Ahmed Al-Kassar was finally beaten
Extra-time came and South Korea continued to press Park Yong-woo volleyed over the bar. Whislt Kim Min-Jae had two headers palmed away by Ahmed Al-Kassar and a header skimming wide in the space of 30 seconds. Whilst in the second half South Korea where guilty of missing an open goal. Goalscorer Cho Gue-sung elected to pass and the ball eventually came to Son Heung-min and his effort was charged down. South Korea rounded off extra time with another clear chance as Lee Kang-in struck a shot into the corner, which somehow was clawed away by Ahmed Al-Kassar.
Despite the loud Saudi Arabia noise, it was South Korean keeper Jo Hyeon-woo who was the hero, stopping two penalties and aiding his nation with a 4-2 victory against the furverous support for Saudi Arabia.
