Chepo de la Torre out as Chivas coach
The Guadalajara club will make a managerial switch, it announced Monday.
One of Mexico's largest clubs will make another switch at the manager position.
Historically among Liga MX's best teams, Chivas has struggled in recent years. Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre returned to the club to try and reach the heights he had taken it to between 2005-2007, including the 2006 Apertura crown. Though Chivas qualified for the playoffs in the recently concluded Clausura, a slow start to the Apertura has led the team to part ways with the manager.
"[D]e la Torre was named manager of the first team in October of 2014," a Chivas news release stated. "However, from that date he hasn’t achieved the results the team requires, which forces it to take this difficult decision and look for another way to achieve the goals the team requires and to reach and fulfill the fans’ expectations."
Because of poor form in previous tournaments, Chivas is at risk of relegation. After each Clausura tournament, Mexico's relegation system sends down the team with the worst winning percentage over the previous six tournaments.
In addition to his earlier run with Chivas, de la Torre also has managed Toluca and the Mexican national team. Chivas has not announced a replacement, but former River Plate manager Matias Almeyda, who recently left Banfield, was in Guadalajara on Sunday and said he is negotiating with club directors.
