Oliver Glasner conceded Crystal Palace were unable to deal with Newcastle United's "intensity, directness and pace" during their 5-0 defeat at St James' Park.

Following a seven-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Eagles have now suffered back-to-back losses, having gone down 5-2 against Manchester City on Saturday.

It is the first time Palace have conceded five goals in consecutive matches in all competitions since February 1935, while it was the joint-heaviest defeat of Glasner's managerial career.

His side had no answer as their buoyant opponents raced into a 4-0 lead at half-time - aided by a Marc Guehi own-goal – with Eberechi Eze also seeing a tame penalty saved.

"I think Newcastle were excellent, and have shown this in the last few weeks," Glasner told BBC Match of the Day. "We couldn't deal with their intensity, directness and pace.

"When we had the situation to get into the game, it didn't work. There are some days when nothing works, and at the same time, everything worked for Newcastle.

"Sometimes, it's better not to be too analytical, and you have to just throw it in the bin. This is what we'll do today.

"Sometimes, you don't have the right answer. We've changed nothing, but things aren't working any more. We have to be very honest. We're Crystal Palace and if we don't perform at our top level, Newcastle and Manchester City are better than us.

"Maybe, it's good for us getting one step back. Now, we'll focus on the basics and remember what made us so strong. Now is not the time to point fingers. We'll just look in the mirror, and I'll see what I can change a little bit."

Guehi scored an own-goal in both meetings between the sides this season, becoming the second player in Premier League history to net one home and away against an opponent in a single campaign (after Jamie Carragher against Tottenham in 1998-99).

Meanwhile, Eze was the first Palace player to miss a penalty in the division since Wilfried Zaha failed from 12 yards against Nottingham Forest in November 2022.

The Eagles had scored each of their last seven attempts from the spot in the top flight, but Guehi jumped to his team-mate's defence.

"I can't remember the last time Eze missed a penalty," the Palace skipper told Sky Sports. "When he scores, no-one says anything. It happens. We just have to move on."
