US women's star Megan Rapinoe tears ACL
US women's football star midfielder Megan Rapinoe will miss Olympic qualifying and faces a race against time to be ready for Rio 2016.
United States women’s national team midfielder Megan Rapinoe has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee, US Soccer has announced.
Rapinoe, 30, suffered the non-contact injury in training on Saturday (AEDT) as the team was preparing to face Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly in Honolulu on Monday (AEDT).
"I want to thank my team-mates and the staff for the amazing support I've received so far," Rapinoe said in a release. "I know I'll be in the best of hands moving forward and I'll be doing everything I can to get healthy as soon as possible."
In her trademark style, Rapinoe added: "I want everyone to know that I'll be fine, and that I'm currently accepting any recommendations for TV shows to binge watch and great restaurants that deliver in Seattle. I'm also going to get really good at FIFA 16."
While Rapinoe works on her video game skills, the US will face a nervous wait to see if she will be ready for the Olympic Games, which will get underway in eight months' time in Rio de Janeiro.
"All of our hearts feel for Megan and she's certainly a major part of this team, both on and off the field, so to see her go down is tough" said US head coach Jill Ellis. "Megan has a great support system and she's very resilient, so we know she will be back as soon as possible."
