Braunschweig upsets Hamburg to deny it top spot
Hamburg SV missed the chance to move to the top of the 2. Bundesliga standings after a shock 3-1 defeat to Eintracht Braunschweig, which hauled itself out of the bottom two in the process.
Johan Gomez had a penalty saved in the 25th minute, but Rayan Philippe grabbed the lead for the hosts before the break with a neat solo move and they didn't look back.
Fabio Di Michele Sanchez added the second with a pwerful strike four minutes after the restart and Philippe completed his brace with another quality goal on 65 minutes.
Lukasz Poreba grabbed a goal back for Hamburg with 17 minutes to go, but the mountain was too high to conquer by that point, and despite the visitors continually creating chances – 24 in total – Marko Johansson produced a superb performance to keep his side ahead to win the game.
