Jannik Sinner Triumphs at the US Open
Jannik Sinner secured his first US Open title, defeating American Taylor Fritz, who had hoped to become the first local champion in 21 years.
Ranked world number one and already the Australian Open champion this year, Sinner dominated Fritz, ranked 12th, with a decisive 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory in just two hours and 15 minutes. The win denied the American crowd a hometown champion, a feat not achieved since Andy Roddick’s 2003 title.
Sinner's victory is also a personal triumph after recent controversy surrounding a positive doping test at Indian Wells, which was dismissed as a mistake by his physiotherapist.
With six titles this year (all on hard courts), Sinner has now won 12 consecutive matches, having also claimed the Cincinnati Masters 1000 title. He became the fourth player in history to win both hard-court Grand Slams in the same year, joining legends like Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Mats Wilander.
At 23 years old, Sinner is positioning himself as a key figure in the next generation of tennis, alongside Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, who won Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year.
Sinner’s flawless run at the US Open saw him drop only two sets, dispatching formidable opponents like Daniil Medvedev (ranked 5th) along the way.
Celebrities flocked to witness the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium, including Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, Bad Bunny, Patrick Mahomes, Matthew McConaughey, Usher, Jayson Tatum, and Jon Bon Jovi.
