When Will Mbappé Return to Play at the Euros?
The president of the French Football Federation gave the latest news on Kylian's condition. He spoke about his participation in the rest of the Euro.
Phillipe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation, explained on Tuesday, hours after Kylian Mbappé suffered a nose fracture, that it is "a bit premature" to set a "timeline" for his return to competition. This comes after ruling out surgery for now and confirming his continued participation in Euro 2024.
"Kylian, as you know, had that injury to his nose yesterday. The news was quite reassuring in that there is no surgery, at least in the short term. As for his participation for the remainder of the tournament, it's a bit premature to establish a schedule, so we'll wait for medical updates to see how he evolves during the day," he said at a press conference at the team's base in Paderborn, Germany.
"The information was quite positive in the sense that he did not undergo an operation that could have definitively ruled him out of the Euros, which is not the case," emphasized the leader.
Diallo also mentioned that there were "a series of medical tests" to assess the state of Mbappé's nose right after the incident on the field, where he collided face-first with the shoulder of Austrian defender Kevin Danso after a header.
"These tests led to a series of quick conclusions aimed at ensuring limited consequences for him and his participation in the tournament," he added.
"That happened last night. There are no surgical interventions planned in the short term, and we are awaiting updates that will take place during the day to specifically assess Mbappé's conditions for the rest of the tournament," Diallo continued.
In the final stages of Monday's match against Austria in Group D's opening game in Dusseldorf, Mbappé headed towards the Austrian goal and in the process collided with Danso's shoulder, resulting in a nose fracture.
The French forward remained on the ground, received medical attention for several minutes with a visible injury on the field, and was subsequently taken to a hospital in the city for necessary tests, causing concern among the entire French squad.
Following the medical assessments, the decision was made not to proceed with immediate surgery for the French striker. Mbappé left the medical facility, returned to the French team's base in Paderborn, approximately two hours from Dusseldorf by road, and will continue in the Euro 2024 competition after a few days of treatment, albeit wearing a protective mask.
France will face the Netherlands next Friday in the tournament's second round of matches in Germany.
