Toni Kroos Breaks Silence on Cucurella's Controversial Handball
The German footballer stated that he had restrained himself until now and shared his opinion on the controversial incident during the Spain vs Germany quarter-final match of the Eurocup.
Recently retired German footballer Toni Kroos has revealed on his podcast 'Einfach mal Luppen' that he was upset when he saw Cucurella's handball at the end of the Spain-Germany Euro 2020 quarter-final match.
The former Real Madrid player, who stated he had "kept quiet until today" about the incident — having previously declared he wouldn't discuss it — expressed feeling "obviously bitter in hindsight when you see the full result or the importance of a goal at that moment." However, ultimately, "the only thing" they can do is "accept it."
"That means you're not so angry with the referee at that moment because you can't judge it like that yourself. Of course, I then paid attention to the referee. He thought he didn't even have to look at it or the video assistant referee thought he should tell him, 'You don't have to look at it, it's not a handball,'" he emphasized.
Although Kroos admitted he didn't see Cucurella's action during the match, he opined that the match referee, Englishman Anthony Taylor, "at least should have looked at it."
"I think the problem was: he knew that if he looked at it, he had to give it. And I had the feeling that he didn't necessarily want to give it in a game like that," he pointed out.
