The Italian Football Federation Trusts Spalletti
The president of the Italian Football Federation, Gabriele Gravina, announced that he maintains confidence in Luciano Spalletti despite Italy's elimination from EURO 2024 in the Round of 16 against Switzerland (2-0).
"Last night I spoke with Spalletti and it makes no sense to interrupt a multi-year project that has only been underway for eight months," declared the president at a joint press conference still from Germany.
"We have confidence in him; in sixty days we will return to the field and it makes no sense to think that by changing the project in two months a 'Mbappé' will appear," he added.
For his part, Spalletti accepted the fierce criticism from the press and acknowledged that he did not live up to expectations, though his commitment will be total.
"I haven't been the best possible Spalletti. I read comments attributing to me having raised the tone too much," he stated.
"There are still many things to prove; my commitment will be total. We need to be honest in assessing these 14 matches I've been in charge and my career. We've been good to a certain extent. Yesterday, we took a significant step back that we cannot accept, but I believe I know what is needed," he concluded.
