Renowned German Paper Names Euro 2024 Favorite, and It's Not Germany
The German newspaper BILD has labeled the Spanish national team as the "top favorite" to win the Euro Cup after the first round of the tournament.
According to BILD, La Roja was "in top form" to defeat Croatia 3-0 at the start of the "impressive Group B (with Italy and Albania)," in a match where Morata and Fabián Ruiz showed "cool composure" to score two goals in three minutes.
The prestigious paper also praised the performance of the "still a child prodigy" Lamine Yamal, who, at 16 years and 338 days old, is the youngest player in Euro Cup history.
These points make Spain the "top favorite," according to BILD, just ahead of the German national team.
Regarding the host team, which overwhelmed Scotland in the opening match, BILD described their debut as the "start of the show with 5 goals," noting that "no team scored more frequently on the first day."
"The home advantage inspires the German team. Additionally, the magical duo 'Wusiala' (Wirtz + Musiala) inspires the whole nation. If the defense can now withstand real challenges, Germany will suddenly become the top favorite for the title alongside Spain," BILD reasoned about their national team.
The list of favorites at the end of the first round, according to the German newspaper, also includes Switzerland, which it describes as a "well-rehearsed, effective, and tough opponent"; the Netherlands, which it notes "if they convert their numerous chances into goals, they will now be among the favorites"; and France, which BILD says, although their "defense was quite solid," "once again demonstrated their huge dependence on Kylian Mbappé" and that they "must improve significantly before their big dream of winning the Euro Cup can become a reality."
