Álvaro Morata and Rodrigo Hernández Suspended by UEFA
The internationals received a one-match suspension for their chants during the Euro 2024 celebration.
Spanish national team players Álvaro Morata and Rodrigo Hernández have been suspended for one match by UEFA for chanting "Gibraltar español" during the celebration of Spain's Euro 2024 victory in Madrid on July 15.
Following the opening of a disciplinary procedure, UEFA’s Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) has decided to sanction both players for "violating basic standards of decent conduct, using sporting events for non-sporting statements, and discrediting the sport of football," as stated in a UEFA statement released on Tuesday.
During the celebration, both players sang the chant "Gibraltar español" at the public events held in the capital to celebrate Spain's fourth European title, which was secured after defeating England 2-1 in the final in Berlin.
The Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) filed an official complaint with UEFA on July 16, calling the Spanish national team's celebration "extremely provocative and insulting."
The GFA also described the chants as "unacceptable" and stated that "there is no place for such behavior in football."
UEFA admitted Gibraltar as a full member in May 2013, following a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and against the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Spanish government.
