Bayer: From "Neverkusen" to "Winnerkusen"
Bayer Leverkusen is having a historic season, which is why the club registered this new trademark.
Bayer Leverkusen has trademarked the nickname "Winnerkusen" on the eve of the Europa League final, as reported by the "Bild" newspaper, citing data from the German Patent and Trademark Office.
After using the name as a tag on the internet since they were crowned Bundesliga champions on April 14, the German club has taken the opportunity to secure the patent for the designation.
The nickname, referring to their status as champions and undefeated, contrasts with the humorous moniker of "Neverkusen," coined due to the club's tendency to falter in the final stages of major competitions.
The team coached by Spanish coach Xabi Alonso is having an unprecedented season. They have won the Bundesliga for the first time in their history and are qualified for the finals of the German Cup and the Europa League.
They will contest both finals this week against Kaiserslautern and Atalanta, respectively. All this without having lost a single one of the 51 matches they have played to date.
