Feyenoord 0-3 Inter: Chivu's side send out statement in Champions League

  • Inter continued their upward trajectory in the Champions League as they eased past Feyenoord with a confident performance.

Inter earned a second consecutive Champions League victory as they eased past Feyenoord 3-0.

Yann Bisseck, Francesco Pio Esposito and Piotr Zielinski were all on target in a commanding win at Stadion Feijenoord to end their Champions League losing streak on the road.

Luciano Valente was caught on the ball, and Inter moved it quickly down the right, with Djed Spence sliding through to Bisseck, who shrugged off his defender on the end of the box to whip his shot into the top-left corner after eight minutes.

Marcus Thuram forced a tame save out of Tjark Ernst shortly after, while Anis Hadj Moussa saw a tight-angled effort smothered at the other end just after the half-hour mark.

However, just as Feyenoord were building some momentum, Inter got their second in the 34th minute. After a pacy counter-attack, Spence's cross deflected kindly to Esposito, who smashed his header in off the crossbar, despite Ernst's best efforts to keep it from crossing the line.

Zielinski forced Ernst into action just before the break and then added to Inter's advantage nine minutes into the second half.

He brushed off his defender during a driving run to the edge of the box before arrowing a powerful strike past the helpless Ernst.

Feyenoord attempted to pull back into the contest, but Inter kept pushing and had a fourth ruled out in the 66th minute, when Esposito tapped in Federico Dimarco's cross, but he had set off too early.

Inter start to build momentum at the right time

It was a disappointing start to the Champions League campaign for Inter, who suffered back-to-back defeats against Real Madrid and Club Brugge, but two straight wins have them making moves up the table.

They earned their 87th win in the Champions League, drawing level with AC Milan for the joint-second-most of any Italian club behind Juventus (118).

Despite still missing captain Lautaro Martinez through injury, Inter have not lost their goal threat. Esposito has been directly involved in five goals in his six starts in the competition (three goals, two assists).

But it was Zielinski who kept pushing have a team-high three shots, with two on target, though he only generated 0.08 expected goals (xG) of Inter's 0.92 total. The Pole also won possession the second-most times, with only Hakan Calhanoglu (eight) doing so more.

Inter remain unbeaten across their 14 Champions League meetings with Dutch sides (W11 D3), and it was a big three points that moved them up to 14th in the table ahead of Wednesday's games.

They sit just one place above LASK, who brushed aside Slovan Bratislava 4-0, recording their biggest-ever win in major European competition in the process.
