PSG Draw with Controversial Finish Against PSV in Thrilling Match
Paris Saint-Germain drew 1-1 at the Parc des Princes against PSV Eindhoven in Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League. Despite deserving more, the Parisian side failed to secure all three points at home and will now focus on Le Classique.
Achraf Hakimi scored PSG's goal, while Noa Lang had given the visitors the lead. The end of the match was filled with controversy as the referee awarded a penalty to Luis Enrique's team, which was later overturned after a VAR review.
The lack of finishing ability hampered Paris Saint-Germain's comeback against PSV Eindhoven, who failed to capitalize on counterattack opportunities but managed to secure a point from the Parc des Princes that leaves neither team satisfied (1-1). Until the last moment, Luis Enrique's team pushed for victory, searching for a last-minute win like they did in the first round against Girona, but they were unable to achieve it this time.
Their inefficiency in front of goal condemned them to a disappointing draw following their loss to Arsenal, forcing the Parisians to fight hard to progress in Europe. The French side managed to equalize after conceding an initial goal due to a defensive error—PSV's only shot on target—but they kept pressing until the end. In stoppage time, they saw the VAR overturn a penalty awarded by the referee, and Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benítez, who was celebrating his 100th match with PSV, made a crucial save from Marquinhos' header right on the goal line.
This exemplified PSG's ongoing struggles in front of goal, missing the effectiveness of Kylian Mbappé, whose finishing often masked the team's deficiencies. Without him, things are proving to be more challenging. The constant runs from Dembélé and Barcola were ineffective against a well-organized PSV defense, and the equalizer came from Hakimi in a match where PSG took 26 shots but only managed one goal.
A fiery half-hour, featuring chances from Barcola, Lee, and Dembélé, made PSG deserving of at least one goal, but it was followed by fifteen minutes of disarray after Noa Lang scored PSV’s first shot on target in the 34th minute. This goal stifled Luis Enrique’s side, who had started brightly but lacked the finishing touch that has eluded them this season—their first without Kylian Mbappé.
Mistakes piled up, with Barcola shooting wide in the 11th minute and failing to convert in the 27th; Lee had his shot saved in the 16th; and Dembélé hit the crossbar in the 19th and sent another effort over the bar in the 30th. Meanwhile, the Dutch capitalized on a lost ball from Dembélé to launch a quick counterattack that allowed Lang to put his team ahead.
The foundations of the Parc des Princes shook as the Spanish coach expressed his frustration, urging his players to keep fighting. They returned to the pitch determined to pressure PSV, who were again under sustained fire but with poor accuracy. The equalizer came from an unexpected source—a long-range shot from Hakimi that surprised Benítez, slipping through his legs.
This aggressive push left PSG vulnerable to a Dutch counterattack that failed to materialize. Mauro Junior squandered a clear chance in the 54th minute, but Guus Til's miss six minutes later—alone in front of Donnarumma—was even more glaring with the score still level.
Despite the persistent efforts of the Parisians, their lack of precision haunted them, unable to beat Benítez again, who remained composed after his earlier error. Luis Enrique made a complete overhaul of his attacking line, bringing in Asensio, 18-year-old Mayulu, and a low-on-confidence Kolo Muani, but the substitutions did not improve their finishing.
Then came the final twist: the penalty awarded to Asensio when everything seemed lost, and Marquinhos' header that Benítez heroically saved on the goal line, shifting from villain to hero for his team.
