Mourinho's Fenerbahçe Falls to Lille in the Champions League
Fenerbahçe, the team representing Turkey in the Champions League, suffered a 2-1 defeat in the first leg of the third qualifying round against Lille, following a last-minute goal.
The match, held at Stade du Hainaut in France, was officiated by Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs. Lille quickly took the lead with a goal from Tiago Santos in the 12th minute. Fenerbahçe managed to equalize in the 79th minute with a spectacular free-kick goal from İrfan Can Kahveci. However, in the final minutes, Zhegrova scored the winning goal for Lille, leaving the French team with a slight advantage going into the second leg.
The return match of this round will be played on Tuesday, August 13, at 20:00. Fenerbahçe, coached by José Mourinho, will need a victory to continue advancing in the tournament. In the previous round, the Turkish team had surpassed Lugano with scores of 4-3 and 2-1, showing good performance that they could not replicate in this last match.
During the game, Fenerbahçe had several scoring opportunities. In the 31st minute, Edin Dzeko had a clear chance after a ball steal by İsmail Yüksek, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Chevalier. Also noteworthy were the offensive actions of Saint-Maximin, who came close to scoring on several occasions but failed to convert.
Zhegrova's injury-time goal was a harsh blow for Fenerbahçe, who had shown good form in the second half. Despite the defeat, Mourinho's team still has a chance to redeem themselves in the second leg and advance to the next round of the Champions League.
