Rising Tension with Mourinho in Turkey: "If he wants to go, he should go"
Uruguayan goalkeeper Muslera has responded to the Portuguese coach's criticism of the Turkish league, and tensions are rising.
The relationship between José Mourinho and Turkish football is at an all-time high in tension. The Portuguese coach's harsh criticisms of referees and the level of the league have sparked a wave of backlash. Fernando Muslera, Galatasaray's goalkeeper and one of the most respected figures in Turkey, did not hold back and responded forcefully to Mourinho's words.
Muslera Speaks Out Without Restraint
Muslera, who has been an emblematic foreign player in Turkey for 14 years, expressed his frustration over Mourinho's comments: “This is the first time in my career here that I feel compelled to speak in this way. I’ve won 17 trophies in 14 years and have always tried to advance Turkish football. However, Mourinho has only been here for four months and is already criticizing our league. If he doesn’t like it, no one is forcing him to stay.” Muslera emphasized the importance of valuing those who, like himself, have worked to improve football in Turkey.
Criticism from Sivasspor Players
Muslera is not alone in his discontent. Players from Sivasspor, Fenerbahçe's most recent league opponent, have also voiced their criticism of the Portuguese coach. Fode Koita, after his team’s 4-0 defeat to Fenerbahçe, shared a video on Instagram tagging Mourinho, alleging a controversial handball in one of the goals. In response, Mourinho posted a video highlighting an uncalled foul in favor of Fenerbahçe from a previous match against Trabzonspor, further stoking tensions.
A Series of Controversies
Mourinho has focused much of his frustration on referees and officiating decisions in matches involving Galatasaray. Even after a recent victory over Trabzonspor, the Portuguese manager remained unhappy with the refereeing, asserting that, had he known all the specifics of the Turkish league environment, he might not have accepted the job. His words were seen as a slight toward Turkey, leading many in Turkish football to question his commitment.
Possible Return to the Premier League
Amid this tension, a new rumor has emerged that could change the situation. According to The Guardian, Mourinho may be open to a Premier League return, with Newcastle United as a potential destination if the club parts ways with current manager Eddie Howe. In Turkey, this possible move would surprise few, given the growing discontent and ongoing controversies surrounding the Portuguese coach.
Overall, Mourinho’s situation in Turkey remains surrounded by controversy. His relationship with the league and his statements have stirred up criticism and may ultimately signal the end of his brief stint in the country.
