Minus 2 Points? How Adana are bending reality in the Super Lig
A top-flight club in Turkey could end up with less points at the end of the season than the start
Southampton have 11. Real Valladolid are doing a little better with 16. Holstein Kiel have racked up 19. Those numbers refer to the clubs currently at the bottom of the Premier League, LaLiga and Bundesliga, respectively, and the points they possess.
Whilst these tallies will be condemning all three teams to second-tier soccer next season, the points totals are positively outstanding compared to the club currently at the foot of the Turkish Super Lig standings, Adana Demirspor. That's because Adana have -2 points. In fact, to avoid any confusion, this madness needs to be spelt out in full: Minus Two Points.
So, how did it come to pass that a team has managed to have a worse points tally one month from the end of the season, than at the start? How could it be that Adana supporters are looking back wistfully to August when the team had zero points?
Well, it's a situation largely of their own making, both due to financial irregularities (a broad description if ever there was one) and their owner's hot-headedness in a game against Galatasaray.
First things first. Adana, would be rock bottom of the table in Turkey anyway, even if adding up all their points amassed, which is just 10 in total – two wins and four draws. However this situation worsened on the 6th December when the Turkish authorities took away 3 points due to the cryptically titled infraction of 'deficiencies in their licensing process'.

At the time, Adana only had 2 points from 14 games so matters were not exactly going swimmingly anyway. However, soon after Adana managed back-to-back wins to move into positive figures at 5 points.
But then there was an ill-fated moment in an away trip to Galatasaray on the 9th February, when the Adana players were ordered from the pitch by their boss in protest over a penalty awarded to Gala earlier in the game.
The Turkish FA hit Adana with another three-point fine. Matters worsened later on in the month when FIFA whacked Adana with a six-point deduction due to financial issues.
That's the basic math of the situation: 10 points earned and 12 lost in punishments. So, if you are a fan of Southampton or Real Valladolid and are unhappy at the state of affairs at your clubs, then count your blessings. At least your team actually has some points to show for their work.
