Lautaro Martínez Sets New Milestone with Inter Milan
The Argentine forward scored the decisive goal against Roma, a strike that also secured his place in the history of the Nerazzurri club.
Argentine striker Lautaro Martínez has become the all-time leading foreign goal scorer for Inter Milan with his decisive goal against Roma (0-1) at the Stadio Olimpico in the Italian capital, bringing his total to 133 goals.
The Argentine forward, who is the undisputed captain and leader of Simone Inzaghi's side, has been with the 'Nerazzurri' since 2018. In 291 appearances, he has scored 133 goals, placing him seventh on the club's all-time scoring list, tying with Hungarian Istvan Nyers, who played in the 1940s and 50s.
He has surpassed the goal tallies of other compatriots like Mauro Icardi (124 goals), Diego Milito (75), and Julio Cruz (75), as well as other club legends such as Italian Christian Vieri (123), Brazilian Adriano (74), Swedish Zlatan Ibrahimovic (66), and fellow Brazilian Ronaldo (59).
Lautaro's next target is to reach 143 goals, the record held by Italian Benito Lorenzi. Above him are Italians Sandro Mazzola (162), Roberto Boninsegna (173), Alessandro Altobelli (209), and the legendary Giuseppe Meazza (284), after whom Milan's stadium is named.
"This new record means a lot to me. Since I arrived, I've been treated as if I was born here, and this is very important to me," Lautaro said, who was named MVP of the match against Roma.
"My best goal with Inter is the first one, a header at San Siro against Cagliari, the goal that opened the door to everything," he added.
Lautaro is also among the finalists for the Ballon d'Or: "I’m very happy to be among the finalists for the France Football award because I always work hard, and individual awards mean a lot."
"It's something important, but I always think of the team first. If awards come, the credit goes to the team, the club, and the staff," he concluded.
Thanks to Lautaro's goal, Inter remains just two points behind leaders Napoli, who have 19 points. In the next round, the 'Nerazzurri' will host Juventus in the Italian classic.
