Claudio Ranieri Returns to Coach AS Roma
AS Roma has officially announced Claudio Ranieri as their new head coach, marking his third stint at the helm. Ranieri, who has had a storied coaching career including a Premier League title with Leicester City, will lead the team until the end of the season before transitioning to a senior advisory role within the club's management.
In his upcoming role, Ranieri will serve as an advisor to the club's owners on all sports-related matters, actively participating in the search and decision-making process for his successor. This move aims to stabilize the club amidst a tumultuous period and leverages Ranieri’s deep connection with the team and fans.
Ranieri's appointment follows complications in securing Vincenzo Montella, the current head coach of the Turkish national team, and reflects Roma's strategy to mitigate ongoing criticism by bringing in a familiar and respected figure. Ranieri, who briefly retired from football in June after saving Cagliari from relegation, has a long-standing relationship with Roma, both as a former player and coach.
His previous terms as Roma's coach were from 2009 to 2011 and briefly in 2019. Known for his leadership and tactical acumen, Ranieri is celebrated by the fans, who welcomed him back with chants and cheers upon his return from London, where he finalized his contract with Roma's owners, the Friedkin brothers.
Ranieri replaces a succession of coaches including José Mourinho, Daniele De Rossi, and Ivan Juric, who have all led the team at various points through 2024. His return is seen as a pivotal move to restore confidence and guide Roma through the ongoing season and beyond.
