Van Nistelrooy Leaves Manchester United on a Winning Streak, Raising Doubts About Amorim's Arrival
Just hours before Rúben Amorim's arrival at Manchester United, Ruud Van Nistelrooy has cast doubt on the necessity of the Portuguese coach's signing. In his four matches in charge, Van Nistelrooy has secured three wins and one draw, including a 3-0 victory over Leicester City, keeping United 15 points away from the Champions League spots.
It’s true that the schedule has been favorable for the Dutchman, with victories against Leicester City twice, PAOK, and a draw against Chelsea. However, Van Nistelrooy has managed to turn around the negative trajectory left by Erik Ten Hag, improving the chances of remaining in Amorim’s staff or even pursuing a new project as a head coach.
Players like Bruno Fernandes, who had been underperforming under Ten Hag, have shown significant improvement under Van Nistelrooy’s management. The captain was key in the Leicester victory, opening the scoring with a long-range shot, his fourth goal in four matches since Ten Hag’s departure.
However, Fernandes saw a goal that seemed his own being disallowed. After a shot with his thigh following a cross from Mazraoui, the ball deflected off defender Victor Kristiansen and into the opposing goal, but the Premier League awarded it as an own goal, preventing the captain from getting a brace.
The victory for United was assured, and Van Nistelrooy ended his stint with a record that quickly made fans forget Ten Hag. Amorim's challenge will be to continue this momentum to avoid fans questioning whether letting a legend like Van Nistelrooy go was the right decision.
Lastly, Alejandro Garnacho, who came on as a substitute, sealed the win with an impressive goal, finishing with his right foot into the opposite top corner. With four points from six in the Premier League, qualification for the League Cup quarterfinals, and their first European win against PAOK, Van Nistelrooy leaves United with an average of more than 2.5 goals per match, although they still sit 13th with only 15 points.
