Shock Comparison: Mikel Arteta Likened to Jose Mourinho! "No One Saw It Coming"
In England, the Arsenal manager has been compared to the current coach of Fenerbahçe due to their time-wasting tactics.
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool player and one of the most respected TV pundits in England, claimed that Mikel Arteta "is turning into José Mourinho" and that the Spaniard's time-wasting tactics are straight out of the Portuguese manager's playbook.
Arsenal drew with Liverpool on Sunday in a game they led twice but ultimately gave up the advantage in the second half to secure a 2-1 lead. It marks the third time this season the Gunners have dropped points in games they were leading, following matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City, though this time they didn’t face any red cards.
In his analysis for Sky Sports, Carragher argued that Arteta’s time-wasting strategies are lifted "from Mourinho's style playbook" and that although people assume he resembles Pep Guardiola due to their previous working relationship, Arteta’s approach is actually closer to Mourinho's.
"Because they worked together, people think he’s a Guardiola disciple, but I believe Arteta is turning into a coach more like Mourinho, and nobody saw it coming. They were 2-1 up, pressing Liverpool and playing very well, but then pulled back in the second half.
"I know they’ve had some defensive injuries, but they still had midfielders and attackers who could get on the ball and relieve the pressure. That instinct to retreat comes from the manager, and it's happening far too often," added the former Liverpool defender.
