OFFICIAL: Chelsea Signs Barcelona's Rising Star
Chelsea announced on Monday the signing of 18-year-old Spanish forward Marc Guiu from Barcelona, who officially debuted with the first team last October.
Guiu, an international at the U-17 and U-19 levels, has signed a five-year contract with an option for an additional year, according to the London club. After paying the six million euro release clause, Chelsea secured one of the most promising forwards in Spanish football.
Born in Granollers (Barcelona) on January 4, 2006, Guiu expressed his joy in statements released by Chelsea, saying, "It’s an immense joy to sign for the 'Blues.' I had trouble sleeping before the trip here because I was so excited. Since I was little, my dream was to play in the Premier League."
"Now I have the chance to come here to Chelsea, and I will work as hard as I can to succeed at the club," added Guiu, who played seven official matches last season under Xavi Hernández after debuting in a friendly against Japan's Vissel Kobe, replacing Polish star Robert Lewandowski.
His official debut came in October against Athletic Bilbao. He entered the field at the 79th minute and scored the winning goal just one minute later, securing a 1-0 victory. He played two more LaLiga matches, two Champions League matches, and two Copa del Rey matches. He was also instrumental for Barcelona's B team, which came close to achieving promotion to the Segunda División.
