Ilkay Gündogan Leaves Barcelona and Rejoins Manchester City
The midfielder shared an emotional message with Barcelona fans just before his return to Manchester City was officially announced.
Midfielder Ilkay Gündogan was transferred from Barcelona to Manchester City on Friday, just one year after joining the Spanish club from the same English team, as confirmed by both clubs and the player himself.
In his sole season with Barcelona, the German international was a crucial figure under the recently dismissed Xavi Hernández. He was one of the standout performers in what was a challenging campaign for Barça, scoring five goals and providing 14 assists. Gündogan also played the most minutes (4,180) and appeared in the most matches (51) of anyone in the squad.
Gündogan shared the news in a message on social media, where he clarified that his initial intention was to continue with Barcelona but attributed his early departure to the club's delicate financial situation.
"I'm leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, it makes me a little less sad," wrote the German international. He addressed Barcelona fans, announcing that "after one year, it's time to say goodbye."
Gündogan explained that he joined Barcelona last year on a free transfer from Manchester City to "take on an exciting new challenge" and was "ready for it."
"I gave everything to fight for the team and the club in the best way possible during a tough season, and I was eager to help my teammates in the new campaign," he confessed.
Despite the short tenure, the midfielder expressed that he experienced "incredible moments and ups and downs" during his time at Barça and emphasized his gratitude for fulfilling his dream of wearing the blaugrana jersey.
"I always wanted to play for Barça, and I'm very grateful for a memory and experience that I will cherish for life. I wish you all the best for the season and the future. The fans deserve to see this great club back among the best in the world," he concluded.
Gündogan has now returned to Manchester City on a one-year contract. During his previous seven seasons with City, he became the team's captain and won 14 titles, including the 2023 Champions League in Turkey, the land of his parents.
