"Alexander-Arnold Will Head to Real Madrid"
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool player, believes that Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah will renew their contracts, but that Trent Alexander-Arnold will head to Real Madrid.
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender and one of the most respected commentators on British television, shared his view that Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah will likely renew their contracts with the Reds. However, he believes that Trent Alexander-Arnold will eventually make a move to Real Madrid.
Carragher made this comment on Sky Sports following Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Sunday. With all three players’ contracts set to expire next June, they’ll be able to negotiate with clubs outside the Premier League starting June 1.
“I think Van Dijk and Mo Salah will stay, but the more time passes, the more I think Trent will go to Real Madrid. Fans will be very frustrated if he doesn’t sign a new contract,” Carragher noted.
Reflecting on Liverpool legends like Steve McManaman and Michael Owen, who joined Real Madrid during less competitive periods for Liverpool, Carragher added, “When Trent’s been here, they’ve competed for everything, been among the best every season. The reaction from fans will be, ‘If you’re a local player and competing for the league and Champions League each season, what more do you want?’ So, there will be a lot of anger if he leaves.”
At 26, Alexander-Arnold—considered the Premier League’s top assisting defender—has won every major trophy with Liverpool, except the Europa League. In a recent interview, he expressed a preference for winning the Ballon d'Or over any collective title.
“When I heard that, my thought was that he’s not going to win it playing as a right-back for Liverpool. Ballon d'Or winners usually play for Real Madrid or Barcelona; that’s where the world’s best players go,” Carragher added.
