Messi and Miami Bow out of MLS Playoffs
Lionel Messi's Inter Miami was eliminated from the MLS playoffs after losing 2-3 at home to Atlanta United, who won the best-of-three series. Despite being the best team in the regular season with a record of 74 points, Gerardo Martino's side couldn't maintain their dominance and were stunned by a team that entered the playoffs through the wild card.
Messi and his squad, who were the heavy favorites to win the MLS Cup, concluded their season with an unexpected defeat, despite having secured the MLS Supporters' Shield. Additionally, Miami suffered other setbacks this year, exiting in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup against Monterrey and in the Leagues Cup round of 16 against Columbus Crew.
Without Sergio Busquets starting, Inter Miami controlled the early stages and took the lead with a goal from Matías Rojas after a rebound in the box. However, Atlanta quickly responded with two goals from Jamal Thiaré, shifting the momentum and shocking the home side.
Despite Messi's efforts, who scored the equalizer, and a constant barrage on Brad Guzan's goal, Atlanta United held firm in defense. A header from Bartosz Slisz sealed the victory for the visitors, who now advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals to face Orlando City.
Inter Miami will now have to focus on the next season, with the consolation of having received an invitation from FIFA to the expanded Club World Cup in 2025, thanks to their impressive performance in the MLS regular season.
