Inter Miami Secure Signing of Sergio Busquets, Who Will Join Messi
Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets will join Argentine Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, the MLS club announced on Friday.
After months of rumors, Inter Miami released a video today announcing the signing of Busquets and featuring praises from soccer stars such as Pep Guardiola and Luka Modric, highlighting the former Barcelona teammate of Messi.
After fifteen seasons in which he won 32 titles (9 La Liga, 7 Copa del Rey, 7 Spanish Super Cups, 3 UEFA Champions Leagues, 3 FIFA Club World Cups, and 3 UEFA Super Cups), the 34-year-old Busquets recently announced his departure from Barcelona.
Busquets was not only an anchor in Barcelona's midfield but also made his mark with the Spanish national team, winning the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship.
The central midfielder, who had spent his entire professional career at Barcelona, will make his debut abroad in Major League Soccer (MLS) alongside Messi, with whom he shared numerous triumphs wearing the blaugrana shirt.
These two significant reinforcements, eligible to be registered in the MLS summer transfer window starting on July 5, will provide much-needed help to an Inter Miami team that is currently struggling, sitting last in the Eastern Conference with only 15 points in 17 matches.
The Miami Herald, citing a source close to the negotiations, reported that Busquets will occupy one of the three designated player slots at Inter Miami.
The designated player rule, created by MLS in 2007 to bring David Beckham to the LA Galaxy, allows teams to bypass salary caps for certain high-profile signings.
Busquets, who also had offers from Saudi Arabia for his future beyond Barcelona, could have another former teammate at Inter Miami besides Messi, as there have also been rumors in recent days linking Jordi Alba to the Florida-based team.
