Carlos Vela Returns to LAFC
Los Angeles FC announced the return of Mexican forward Carlos Vela, who had been away from the pitch after not renewing with the club at the end of 2023.
Los Angeles FC (LAFC) of MLS announced on Monday the return of Mexican star Carlos Vela. The forward, who has been the heart and soul of the team since its founding in 2018, had been away from the pitch this year, leaving some uncertainty about his future as a footballer after not renewing his contract with LAFC at the end of 2023.
At 35 years old, Vela won an MLS Cup (2022) and two MLS Supporters' Shields (2019 and 2022) with LAFC. Additionally, he had a spectacular 2019 season, earning the league MVP and the Golden Boot as top scorer.
Vela also reached two Concacaf Champions Cup finals with LAFC (2020 and 2023) but fell short of winning the title on both occasions.
"Los Angeles and LAFC fans are very important to me and my family," the player said in a statement. "LAFC is a special club, and I am proud of what we've built here. I'm excited to return and help the team achieve great things in any way I can."
Vela has agreed to a deal for the remainder of the 2024 season, with an option for 2025, and will bolster an already dangerous LAFC offense featuring French striker Olivier Giroud, Gabonese forward Denis Bouanga, Polish midfielder Mateusz Bogusz, and Uruguayan winger Cristian Olivera.
Other key players in Steve Cherundolo's squad include French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, Spaniards Ilie Sánchez and Sergi Palencia, and Colombians Jesús Murillo and Eduard Atuesta.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in MLS history, Vela holds the record at LAFC for most appearances (152), minutes played (11,194), goals (78), and assists (59).
"Carlos has played a crucial role in the success we've enjoyed at LAFC both on and off the field," said John Thorrington, co-president and general manager of the California team. "He means a lot to our club, our fans, and our city. It was important for everyone that he returned, and we're thrilled to have him back."
LAFC is currently second in the Western Conference with 48 points, following a tough 4-2 loss in the 'El Tráfico' derby against LA Galaxy, led by Spaniard Riqui Puig, last Saturday. Galaxy tops the West with 55 points but has played two more matches than LAFC.
