Lyon Narrowly Defeats Saint Etienne in Derby
A solitary goal from Alexander Lacazette, his second of the season, tipped the balance in the Rhône derby, handing Lyon a 1-0 victory over Saint Etienne. This win comes after two consecutive draws, solidifying Lyon’s position near the top of Ligue 1, which is led by Paris Saint Germain.
For the first time since January 2022, the derby between these two historic French teams took place. Saint Etienne’s stint in Ligue 2 had deprived French football of this match, which returned at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on the eleventh matchday, ending in favor of the hosts.
The match's only goal came at the half-hour mark from a corner kick taken by Mathis Cherki from the right. Croatian Duje Caleta-Car received the ball and passed it to Corentin Tolisso, who then assisted Lacazette to score with his right knee.
The goal was enough to earn Lyon three points, putting them in fifth place, just one point behind fourth-placed Lille and two points behind third-placed Marseille.
Saint Etienne, now third from bottom, finds themselves in the relegation play-off spot, level on points with Angers and Nantes, who are fourteenth and fifteenth, respectively.
