PSG Signs New Goalkeeper: Competition for Donnarumma?
Paris Saint-Germain, the current Ligue 1 champion of France, has announced through social media the signing of a new goalkeeper: Matvey Safonov, who comes from the Russian club Krasnodar. According to the official announcement, the goalkeeper will be with the Parisian team for five seasons.
The arrival of 25-year-old Safonov comes as Keylor Navas is practically on his way out of PSG. Additionally, Safonov could present a challenge for Gianluigi Donnarumma, as the Russian goalkeeper arrives after having been the captain of "The Bulls" and having gained experience with top teams. In the 2021-2022 Champions League season, he was in the group with Chelsea, Sevilla, and Rennes, where his great performances earned them third place.
In one of his first statements as a Parisian player, Safonov expressed his joy at joining "one of the biggest clubs" and said he was "excited to meet" his future teammates.
"I’m really happy to be joining Paris Saint-Germain, one of the world’s biggest clubs in terms of its history and what it has won. I can’t wait to meet my new teammates, defend my new colours, and make the fans proud. Allez Paris!" said the new Parisian goalkeeper.
