Mason Greenwood Wants to Play in the 2026 World Cup and Pushes for a Return to the England National Team
The next few months will be crucial for Greenwood’s international future. As 2026 approaches, the forward is clear that, whether wearing the English or Jamaican jersey, his goal is to shine on the world's biggest football stage.
Mason Greenwood, currently a forward for Olympique de Marseille, remains determined to participate in the 2026 World Cup. Despite his limited chances of rejoining the England national team, the 23-year-old believes that the arrival of Thomas Tuchel as the head coach of the Three Lions could provide an opportunity for him to make a return to the international scene with England—a team he has only played for once, back in 2020.
Greenwood has requested a meeting with the Football Association (FA) and Tuchel himself, hoping to clarify his future with the national team. The striker is aware that his past at Manchester United, alongside the withdrawn charges that distanced him from the national setup, still stirs controversy. However, his strong performance in Ligue 1 with Marseille, where he has scored six goals in eight matches, keeps him optimistic.
"I want to play at the highest level, and that means the World Cup," Greenwood reportedly told close sources, according to the British newspaper *The Sun*. While England is his priority, he is also considering the possibility of representing Jamaica, thanks to his Caribbean roots, if a return to the Three Lions doesn’t materialize. This alternative would allow him to pursue his dream of competing in the 2026 World Cup, set to take place in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
The arrival of Tuchel, known for his successful stints with clubs like Chelsea and PSG, represents a breath of fresh air for the England national team. The German coach will face his first challenge in the UEFA Nations League this coming November, and his squad list will be closely watched. Greenwood hopes to see his name on that list, trusting that his recent performance with Marseille could be enough to impress the new manager.
While Greenwood's past remains a topic of debate in England, the forward has shown that his focus is on the future and reclaiming his place in international football. However, if the FA decides to continue the approach taken during Gareth Southgate's era and that of his interim successor, Lee Carsley, Greenwood might change course and opt for Jamaica, aiming to help the Caribbean team qualify for the World Cup.
