Kepa Fined A Week's Wages For Substitution Fiasco
Kepa Arrizabalaga's refusal to be substituted in the EFL Cup final has resulted in Chelsea fining him a week's wages.
Chelsea have fined Kepa Arrizabalaga one week's wages for refusing to be substituted in Sunday's EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester City. The money will be donated to Chelsea's charity foundation.
In a statement on the club website, Kepa said, in part, "Although there was a misunderstanding, on reflection, I made a big mistake with how I handled the situation. I wanted to take the time today to apologise fully and in person to the coach, to Willy, my team-mates and to the club. I have done this and now I want to offer the same apology to the fans. I will learn from this episode and will accept any punishment or discipline the club decides is appropriate."
The strange situation played out in the closing moments of extra-time of Sunday's cup final. Kepa was treated for an injury twice, but when Sarri prepared Willy Caballero to sub in, the starting goalkeeper refused. Chelsea ended up losing on penalties.
