Xavi Hernández Hurt by Pedri's Comments
Amid a stellar start to the season for FC Barcelona under Hansi Flick, Pedri has been in the spotlight not just for his performances on the pitch, but also for his comments. The Canary Islander has lavished praise on the new German coach, which has indirectly criticized the previous era under Xavi Hernández.
In the recent 1-4 victory over Girona, Pedri was one of the scorers and didn’t hesitate to highlight the improvements under Flick’s guidance. "We've improved a lot in pressing the opposition. We have a clear understanding of what the coach wants from us," Pedri commented, which many interpreted as a subtle jab at Xavi’s tenure. "The coach has emphasized the importance of starting the league well, and we're responding," the Canary Islander added.
This isn’t the first time Pedri has praised Flick. During the last international break, Pedri remarked that the team has been training much harder since Flick’s arrival:
"We train a lot more than before. The new fitness coaches are really helping us. It’s noticeable that the team maintains physical levels until the end of the match, even after the 70th or 80th minute." Pedri also said he feels more confident under the German coach: "I feel liberated, with less pressure. Flick has given me the confidence to do what I know, and I’m in better physical shape."
These remarks have not been well received by Xavi’s camp, who, according to close sources, feel hurt and surprised by the comments. For the former Barça coach, Pedri was always a key player, praised both publicly and privately, and protected during difficult times, especially during injuries. Xavi's circle highlights that he never rushed Pedri back from injury and always considered him indispensable, being one of the team's pillars.
Despite this controversy, Flick’s era at Barcelona has begun with resounding success. The German coach has led the team to five victories in the first five league games, earning support from both the board and the fans. Known for his discretion with the media, Flick has managed to rejuvenate players like Pedri and Raphinha, who seem to have found a new lease on life.
