Ter Stegen Leaves in Tears and on a Stretcher Against Villarreal
German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen was subbed off on a stretcher, visibly in pain, after injuring his right knee late in the first half at La Cerámica.
The German shot-stopper had to leave the field on a stretcher after landing awkwardly on his knee while catching the ball during a jump. The bad landing forced him to stay down on the pitch for several minutes as his teammates urgently signaled for the medical team to prepare a substitution.
Ter Stegen, replaced by Iñaki Peña, exited just a couple of minutes after making a crucial save in a one-on-one with right-winger Nicolas Pépé, keeping Barça’s 1-2 lead intact.
The keeper had already experienced issues with the same knee three years ago when he had to undergo two surgeries for a patellar tendon injury.
