Ronald Araujo: "I'm Going to Come Back Like a Bull"
The Uruguayan defender is in the final stages of his recovery and explained how the process is going and how he hopes to return to Barcelona.
On October 6, Ronald Araujo marked the fifth anniversary of his debut for FC Barcelona. In an exclusive interview with Barça One, the Uruguayan defender looked back on his journey with the club and discussed his current recovery from injury, as well as his aspirations for the season ahead.
Obliged to Win
Araujo emphasized the expectations that come with playing for Barcelona, stating, “We play in a club where we are obliged to win titles. When we don’t win titles, the season is considered bad. We are Barça, and we are required to win trophies.” He acknowledged the challenges of the previous season, noting it was a time of learning, especially for the younger players in the squad. “It’s true that it’s a new project with many young players. We learned from the tough moments of last season.”
Recovery Progress
The central defender has been sidelined since July 7 due to an injury sustained while playing for his national team during the Copa América. However, he shared positive news about his recovery: “I am progressing very well, and that makes me happy. It hasn’t been easy, but I have learned a lot, both physically and mentally. The club is surprised by how well I am doing. I’m going to come back like a bull,” he declared, with hopes of returning after the upcoming international break in November.
Champions League Ambitions
With Barcelona having not lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy since 2015, Araujo did not shy away from the team's collective ambition. “We all yearn to win the Champions League; it is our biggest goal and the title that eludes us. It is also the title that I need, and I will do everything to lift it,” he admitted.
Captaincy and Leadership
Reflecting on his role as captain, Araujo expressed pride in the responsibility. “Being captain of Barça is an honor. I feel privileged. I know the responsibility it entails, but I feel very prepared for it. Leadership comes naturally to me; I try to keep an eye on everything and make sure everyone is doing well. It’s not just about being attentive on the field, but also off it, to ensure the group is cohesive,” he explained.
Embracing a New Project
Araujo acknowledged that while he hasn’t yet had the chance to share the pitch with some of the new teammates, he is enjoying the current squad. “It’s important to start well in a long La Liga season. I enjoy the team and understand that we must work with humility,” he added.
Looking Ahead
Finally, he mentioned his relationship with national team coach Hansi Flick: “I’ve spoken with him, and we have a good feeling. We discuss various topics. The challenge this season is to win titles,” he concluded.
As Ronald Araujo continues his recovery and prepares for his return, Barcelona fans eagerly anticipate the defender's comeback and the impact he will undoubtedly have on the team.
