Real Madrid Rule Out Sergio Ramos and Aims for a New Center-Back
Real Madrid has closed the door on Sergio Ramos's return. After lengthy discussions and careful consideration, the club’s management has decided that the legendary central defender will not return. The search to strengthen the defense continues, with a clear focus on securing a player with both future potential and immediate impact, especially in light of the team’s current injury crisis, particularly the prolonged absence of Éder Militão.
With an urgent need to bring in a quality center-back in January, the club has narrowed its focus to three main options: Aymeric Laporte, Castello Lukeba, and, more recently, Jonathan Tah, Bayer Leverkusen’s defender. Tah has emerged as the third candidate, with the added advantage of a contract expiring in 2025, which could facilitate a favorable negotiation in the winter transfer window.
Laporte remains the preferred option. Currently at Al Nassr, the Spanish international has expressed an interest in returning to Europe. However, the deal is complex, as it would require the player to accept a significant pay cut to align with Real Madrid’s salary policies. Additionally, the Saudi team demands a substantial transfer fee, making this negotiation a challenging one for the Spanish club.
Lukeba, the young center-back from Leipzig, is second on the list. At just 21, he is seen as a long-term investment. However, his recent contract extension through 2029 includes a high release clause, which could be a significant obstacle. Despite their interest, Madrid is reluctant to overspend on this transfer, maintaining a prudent stance that balances defensive urgency with sustainable financial planning.
The inclusion of Tah as a potential alternative offers a cost-effective and experienced option. At 28, and a regular starter alongside Rüdiger in the German national team, Tah could bring stability and presence to the defense. His contractual situation allows Madrid to push for a favorable deal in January, avoiding high costs and bringing in a reinforcement ready to step up immediately.
