Mateo Mejia: The Colombian Gem at Sevilla, Ex-Manchester United
Mateo Mejía, a Colombian forward who came from Manchester United’s youth academy and joined Sevilla’s reserve team last January, received the great news that he was included in the first-team squad for Sunday’s match at San Mamés against Athletic. But he couldn’t have imagined that his debut would be a "dream come true," as he played a key role in his team's 1-1 comeback.
Born 21 years ago in Zaragoza, Spain, but already having played for Colombia's U-20 team, Mateo was called up by coach Xavi García Pimienta to fill in for injured striker Isaac Romero. And when things weren’t looking good for the team (down 1-0), the coach didn’t hesitate to throw him into the mix as the game neared its end.
Wearing the number 34 jersey, Mateo entered the pitch in the 80th minute, replacing Gerard Fernández ‘Peque’. Just two minutes later, he forced a play that led to Athletic’s goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala being sent off for bringing him down and preventing a potential goal.
With Athletic down to ten men, Sevilla pushed hard for an equalizer, which finally came in stoppage time after a brilliant play by Nigerian Chidera Ejuke that resulted in an own goal by Álex Padilla. Mateo, who began his football career in Real Zaragoza’s youth system before moving to England, shared on social media that September 29, 2024, will forever be a "milestone date."
"My dream debut in La Liga, and what a beautiful feeling to do it wearing Sevilla FC’s colors," said the forward, adding that he is "immensely grateful for this opportunity," though he felt "a bit sad" that the team didn’t secure all three points despite showing "the Grit and Courage this team has."
"This achievement is dedicated to my family, especially my mom and dad, for always being there for me, helping, supporting me, never giving up on me, and making my path as easy and smooth as possible. I love you," wrote the footballer. "Thank you all for your messages and love. I promise this is just the beginning, and I’ll keep giving my all for this badge and these colors. NEVER GIVE UP!" Mateo concluded in his post.
