Julián Álvarez and the "Cholo's" Son Save Atlético Madrid in Mallorca
A solitary goal from Julián Álvarez, following a mistake by Maffeo and Mojica that Giuliano Simeone capitalized on, allowed Atlético Madrid to claim three points against a Mallorca that ran into the best version of Jan Oblak.
Atlético took control of the match in the opening minutes through possession, while a defensive Mallorca relied on flashes from Robert Navarro and connections with its forwards to create danger.
One of Navarro’s plays forced Lenglet out of position, and he had to stop the attacker with a foul that earned him the first yellow card of the game.
Simeone continued to alternate between offense and defense, using a 4-4-2 with Riquelme on the left side of midfield, who dropped back to form a 5-4-1 in defense, with Julián up front.
As the game progressed, Mallorca gained ground, maintaining possession and giving prominence to Sergi Darder, who filled the interior space and left the entire left wing to Mojica.
Darder created the best chance of the first half with a cross to Larin, whose header Oblak saved with an impressive hand, tipping it to the corner.
Atlético struggled to create danger in the first 45 minutes, facing a comfortable local defense that remained untroubled by a disconnected Julián Álvarez and Antoine Griezmann, who was more focused on building plays from deep.
The second half maintained the same pattern, with both teams avoiding risks in possession and looking to hurt each other on the counterattack.
Just before the hour mark, a foul by Lenglet on Larin near the box drew protests from the Mallorca crowd, demanding a second yellow for the French defender, which would have meant his expulsion.
When things seemed bleakest for Atlético, the game’s first goal arrived. An Oblak clearance from a corner found Giuliano, who capitalized on a communication error between Maffeo and Mojica to set up Julián, who scored.
The match intensified as Riquelme missed a golden opportunity when he found himself alone against Greif, but instead of passing, he took the shot, which the Slovak goalkeeper saved to keep the score open.
Arrasate brought on Chiquinho in place of Darder to add more unpredictability and kept two strikers on the pitch, subbing in Abdón for a Larin far from his top form.
Atlético completely gave up possession and relied on a strong performance from Giménez, back in the starting lineup, who got the better of Muriqi, who was unable to make a decisive impact.
A clearance mistake by Witsel nearly compromised the result, leaving Abdón with a clear chance, but Oblak made a miraculous save to prevent the equalizer, confirming his excellent form following the Paris game.
Abdón's shot was Mallorca's last chance, as the team extended its winless streak to three games, while Atlético secured its fourth consecutive victory, gaining some breathing room before the international break.
